The Chmelnice rock club is back

The legendary rock club Chmelnice in Jarov, Prague comes back to its beginnings and brings in live concerts again.

The cult club started in 1981 and became probably the most renowned Prague venue during the eighties thanks to its non conform program. Gigs of underground bands, many of which have started there (Garage, Hudba Praha and others), dramatic and lecture evenings took place there. During the communist era, this place became a sort of little space of freedom and among visitors there were often dissidents and other seditious groups of people. That´s why the club was a thorn in the official cultural institutions´ side.

In the 90´s the club declined, was closed for some time and then became a disco. Now it tries to resurrect its reputation and started yesterday with a live show of the band Hudba Praha, which celebrated its 25 years anniversary there. The club is now called Exit Chmelnice, has space for 500 visitors and hopes to revive the alternative spirit of its past.
